Thailand Culture
Thai people have a reputation for friendliness and warm hospitality that should appeal to every traveler.
Thailand is also a Buddhist country where statues are considered sacred. Buddhist monks, clothed in saffron colored robes are a very common sight. It is an extremely attractive tourist destination. From the capital, Bangkok, with its vast cultural attractions, to Thailand’s exotic beaches, islands and national parks, the country presents tourists with a wide variety of travel experiences. For the most part, Thailand is relatively inexpensive, offering many amenities, including excellent food and affordable, quality lodging.
Island of Phuket, Thailand
With 540 square kilometers of land area and many beautiful sandy beaches, Phuket is a diverse and fascinating island to explore. A rich culture, a beautiful coastline, spectacular natural sights, loads of outdoor sports and activities, shopping, nightlife and dining are just a few of its attractions.
Just offshore are dozens of smaller islands, easily reachable by boat. The natural wonders of the mainland, found just beyond Phuket over the bridge to the north of the island, are also close at hand. Learn more . . . http://www.phuket.net/
What is it like to travel in Thailand?
Thailand is an exciting cultural oasis thriving with not only the ancient, but also with all the amenities of a modern western culture. You will find that you can travel with ease and comfort in this wonderful country.
Do I Need to Learn to Speak Thai?
Standard Thai, also known as Central Thai or Siamese, is the official language of Thailand. Many locals speak a little bit of English, mostly tourism-related words. They always appreciate hearing some Thai spoken by tourists. English is a mandatory language in Thai schools, so most local Thai people speak and/or understand some English. If you want to learn basics it is considered very polite and will help you on your stay.

Money & Such Matters
Currency in Thailand is called “Baht”. Retailers do not accept other currencies for transactions.
A baht is divided into 100 satang. The following coins and notes are currently in use:
Coins: 25 and 50 satang
1, 2, 5 and 10 baht banknotes: 10 (brown) 20 (green) 50 (blue) 100 (red) 500 (purple) 1,000 (grey or brown)
See pictures of banknotes: http://www.thaiwaysmagazine.com/thailand/thailand_banknote.html
Exchange rates at the airport are poor. The best exchange rates will be found in your home country, so it’s recommended to exchange your currency there.
The exchange rate is approximately $32.50 US Dollars equals $1,000 Baht. (daily rates fluctuate)
Current exchange values can be found at: http://www.xe.com
Once you arrive in Thailand, if needed, we can direct you to establishments with good rates.
* If you bring US dollars, be sure they are printed in 2001 or later and in excellent condition. $100 bills get the best exchange rate.
ATMs that accept bank cards and credit cards from all over the world are common. ATMs only dispense in Thai Baht. There is an ATM machine close to the hotel, about a 10 minute walk, and there are banks within a 10 minute drive.
IMPORTANT: Be certain to notify your bank/credit card company that you will be using your card in Thailand. Suppliers of cards will now commonly stop usage of your card due to “unusual” location purchases.
Note: Any extra spending while at the hotel and any food/beverages purchased at the Restaurant can be charged on your credit card. Therefore we recommend not bringing too much extra cash from home (a maximum $15,500 Baht - equivalent of $500 USD should be sufficient).

How Do I Organize Staying Longer / Getting Visa?
The Visa laws seem to change so often there is no single answer.
Basically it depends on what country you are coming from (certain countries can get a 1 year visa before they come out).
Upon arriving in Bangkok or Phuket, you will be issued a 30 day tourist visa if you did not acquire one before leaving your home country. When your 30 days are over, you will be required to leave and re-enter Thailand (can do the same day) in order to stay for another 15 days to 3 months. Studying Muay Thai and studying the Thai language is a great way to get a 1 year visa.
www.thaivisa.com is a great site to get up-to-date information on Visa extensions and applications. Visa runs can be made easily to Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and even Cambodia / Laos / Vietnam.
Travel Vaccinations - Plus
All retreat guests should visit either their personal physician or a travel health clinic 4-6 weeks before departure for any vaccinations that you may require.
Suggested vaccinations for Thailand are as follows, but please determine the correct one’s for you with your health professional.
Hepatitis A Recommended for all travelers
Typhoid For travelers who may eat or drink outside major restaurants and hotels
Yellow fever Required for all travelers greater than one year of age arriving from a yellow-fever-infected area in Africa or the Americas. Not recommended otherwise.
Japanese encephalitis For travelers who may spend a month or more in rural areas and for short-term travelers who may spend substantial time outdoors in rural areas, especially after dusk
Hepatitis B Recommended for all travelers
Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) Two doses recommended for all travelers born after 1956, if not previously given
Tetanus-diphtheria Revaccination recommended every 10 years
Important: Consult your Health Care Professional regarding bringing a medicine for dysentery or diarrhea BEFORE you go. This is always a wise addition for anyone traveling abroad.
Taxi Cabs & Other Means of Travel
Taxi Cabs are the best way to travel. They can be easily hailed down. Taxi fare rates are low in Thailand, compared to North American rates. A 45 minute taxi fare would typically cost approximately $22 USD or about $650 Baht.
Autos and scooters are readily available to rent, however driving is on the opposite side of the road to North American standards and the driving system does not have the same level of safety as North America. If you choose to rent a vehicle we recommend an international drivers license, for liability purposes, although it’s not required for driving. You will need a passport and driver’s license for rentals.
Scooters are available to rent through the Camp.
Tipping / Gratuities
Tipping is not part of Thai tradition. If you are coming from a tipping culture, try to resist the urge to tip everyone. You may want to keep in mind that most local workers are poorly paid, so if the service is good you may want to consider leaving a little extra, possibly 5-10%. Many restaurants add on an extra 10% service tax to the bill (though it’s unknown if the workers ever see it).
Safety Box & Personal Belongings
Each guest accommodation is provided with a safety box in your room at no charge. The resort is not responsible for any stolen personal belongings on the premises.
Means of Communication & International Calling
We recommend the use of Skype or other Internet phone services. The resort and our training center have Wi-Fi so the use of voice over Internet is easy, inexpensive and reliable.
Internet Access
Internet access is widely available in Thailand, and cheap, with varying connection speeds. There is Wi-Fi in the Villa guest rooms, at the Training Center and public computers in the hotel guesthouse lobby.
Wireless Internet is available to our guests at no cost and can be accessed via personal laptops for use of e-mail, Skype, or any Internet-phone calls.
Wi-Fi internet is available at the Camp free of charge; just ask for the network key in the gym office. There are many internet cafes and Wi-Fi Hotspots around Phuket. Internet cafe’s are cheap and usually have very fast connection.
Please note that we do not guarantee connection to all types of laptop computers and we do not provide a technician for Wi-Fi access.
Mobile Phones
You can bring your *unlocked mobile phone to Thailand and buy a pre-paid SIM card, which allows you to make calls and send and receive text messages. Basic SIM cards typically cost approximately $300 Baht ($10 USD), the bulk of which is usable credit. US citizens require tri-band phones with GSM capability to be able to make calls in Thailand. New, cheap mobile phones can be purchased for around $900 Baht ($30 USD). *Contact a technician in your home city to have phone unlocked before traveling.
Medical Services in Phuket
From a general health perspective, Thailand has good health standards, and is considered one of the safe destinations in the developing world. If you have a health care provider in the country of your origin, you may want to inquire before you travel about their coverage policy, when traveling to Thailand.
English-speaking doctors have offices located in close proximity to the hotel, along with dentists. Chiropractors, and other holistic healers, providing a range of health care and therapeutic services are also close by.
A Western standard medical hospital is located within a short drive.
Hotel Laundry Service
Laundry service is available at the hotel and is very affordable and convenient.
Write your name on a piece of paper and put it in a bag, drop off your laundry and pick it up the following day, pressed and folded. This is typically charged to your hotel bill.
Restaurant at Your Hotel & at the Training Center
The Hotel Restaurant & the Training Centre offers an extensive variety of fresh healthy gourmet food, including a wide variety of Thai fare and also Western fare.
All additional purchases made apart from the meals provided by our Boot Camp will be charged individually and can be paid with cash Baht or charged directly to your hotel room.
Climate
Thailand is a tropical country. The temperatures on the island of Phuket are 30 – 34 Celsius (86 – 93 Fahrenheit) in the day and 21 Celsius (70 Fahrenheit) at night. The water temperature never dips below 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).
